For over 30 years my father was a member of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church in New Haven, Connecticut, one of the oldest black churches in the country.

As was the case with Lafayette, membership in the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church was an important and active part of our family's community life.

Cross section of a picture of the men of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church (circa 1965). My father is in the third row from the top, second from the left.

My father's beliefs were simple, yet, strong:

  • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
  • You will get out of life what you put into it.
  • If you place your faith in God, your blessings will outweigh your burdens.
